Dentistry 'needs urgent reform' says OFT

Some dentists are misleading their patients about their right to NHS treatment so they will pay for private treatment instead, according to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

It carried out a study of NHS and private dentistry in the UK.

The OFT found that about 500,000 people a year were given the wrong information about their treatment options.

Overall, however, the OFT found that most patients were satisfied with their dentists' services.

In response to the report Health Minister Lord Howe said: "We welcome this study, which has found that the vast majority of patients are happy with their dental treatment - and that the vast majority of dentists behave ethically.

"However, denying patients care on the basis of misinformation is a very serious matter - any dentist that does this risks breaching their contract and we would expect the local NHS to take action."

The OFT discovered several important problems with the availability of dentists' services and the choices for patients.

The regulator concluded that the supply of dentistry in the UK was in need of urgent reform.

"Our study has raised significant concerns about the UK dentistry market which need to be tackled quickly in the interest of patients," said John Fingleton, the OFT's chief executive.

"All too often patients lack access to the information they need, for example when choosing a dentist or when getting dental treatment.

"We also unearthed evidence that some patients may be receiving deliberately inaccurate information about their entitlement to NHS dental treatment, and we expect to see robust action taken against such potential misconduct by dentists," he added.

Healthy Body, Healthy Smile: What Good Nutrition Can Do for You

Quick! Make a mental list of habits that have an impact on your dental health.

You thought about brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups, right? Those are all hugely beneficial in keeping your teeth healthy, it’s true. But did you know that your diet has a big influence on your dental health? To really address the overall issue, let’s dig a little.

Many people don’t realize that a balanced diet with good nutrition is a key element in keeping a smile attractive and healthy. The same vitamins and minerals that keep your body in great shape are equally beneficial to your teeth. A few powerhouse players include:

  • Calcium and Vitamin D
A proper amount of calcium is very important to maintaining the structure of your teeth, along with phosphorus and magnesium. Vitamin D boosts absorption of the mineral, so a sufficient level of both is essential.

  • Vitamins A, C, and B complex
If you’re wanting to preserve and protect tooth enamel, vitamin A is essential. Deficiency in this vitamin can contribute to problems like gum disease, overgrown gums, and more. You may not know it, but vitamin C is responsible for increasing the health and efficiency of small oxygen- and nutrient-delivering capillaries throughout the body. A deficiency in vitamin C could mean loose teeth, mouth sores, and even bleeding gums. You can count on vitamin B complex to keep reduce the chance of cracked and bleeding lips, as well as open sores and lesions on the inside and outside of your mouth.

  • Fluoride
Tap water provides a good source of this tooth decay prevention agent, and nearly all toothpastes contain fluoride as an active ingredient as well. Fluoride helps to strengthen your teeth’s enamel, in tandem with calcium and phosphorus. Other minerals that are beneficial to good dental health include zinc, iodine, iron, and potassium. All of which are readily available in a balanced, nutritious diet.

So if you want to keep those pearly whites strong and beautiful for the years to come, pay attention to the fuel you’re giving your body. A healthy body and a secure smile—there’s no downside to good nutrition. Remember: if you are good to your teeth, they’ll be good to you too!

Saliva’s Role in Oral Health

When you think about oral health, you probably think about your gums and your teeth. After all, Americans spend about $1.8 billion on toothpaste and $775 million on toothbrushes. We’re serious about our oral hygiene habits! (And it appears we put our money where our mouths are, too!)

So, when you consider your dental wellbeing, do you think about … saliva? Most people don’t think about the role saliva plays into dental care, and how important it is for maintaining excellent oral health. It’s true! Saliva is a necessary component in preventing cavities. It clears away bacteria that cling to your gums and enamel and cause disease and infection.

Saliva is produced by … wait for it … your salivary glands, and it’s made up of 99.5% water. Big surprise, right? So, what’s the other .5%? Believe it or not, that teeny tiny part of saliva is comprise of several components, including electrolytes, mucus, glycoproteins, enzymes, and antibacterial compounds. Now, you know why saliva is the first step in the digestion process! It helps lubricate your food, making it easier to chew and swallow. Saliva also enhances your taste, not to mention your motor functions, which helps you to talk.

From a dental perspective, saliva helps break down the food particles that lodge in and around your teeth, and protects your enamel from bacterial decay. In addition, saliva actually remineralizes your teeth, using calcium and phosphates. If you stimulate your salivary glands by chewing sugar-free gum (or just eating anything, really), then the saliva produced actually has more of the good stuff in it—and is more effective in buffering that bacteria and keeps those pearly whites mineralized.

So, what happens if there’s a reduction in your saliva production? The less saliva you produce, the higher the risk of decay. It also makes eating and talking more difficult. Some medications and conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome can cause saliva deficiencies, which can negatively impact your oral health. The reduction of saliva is called xerostomia—or dry mouth. Dry mouth also occurs as the result of aging or changes in hormones.

If you’re suffering from dry mouth, make an appointment with your dentist. Your dentist can diagnose the problem and get you treated. Remember, saliva is a very important part of your oral health!

Tooth Sensitivity and Your Smile

Every year, dentists all across the country hear complaints from their patients about tooth sensitivity. As a common oral health problem, tooth sensitivity is caused when the gums recede, exposing tooth roots. When hot or cold stimuli come into contact with these roots, a sensation is passed through the tubules in the roots directly to the nerve of the tooth, creating pain.

But, you might be wondering, what causes the gums to recede in the first place? Here are five of them:

Age – Believe it or not, aging plays a role in the level of tooth sensitivity you might experience. Research indicates that patients who are between 25 and 30 could experience more sensitivity than patients of other ages.

Brushing Technique – Depending on how you brush, you could be wearing down the enamel on your teeth, in the process exposing the sensitive dentin underneath. What’s more, brushing incorrectly can also harm the soft tissue of the gums and cause tooth roots to become exposed.

Bruxism – Bruxism is a medical term for something more simple and common—teeth grinding. Patients who struggle with teeth grinding may, over time, cause hairline fractures to develop in their teeth, making them vulnerable to hot or cold stimuli. What’s more, teeth grinding can also wreak havoc on tooth enamel, resulting in erosion of this protective barrier.

Cracked Teeth – When cracks develop in a tooth, it’s possible for bacteria to find a way inside, where it can irritate the interior pulp. As a result, teeth can respond negatively, with the end result being sensitivity.

Gum Disease – Gum disease is caused by bacteria and plaque that have built up around the teeth and gums. If left untreated, this common oral health problem will eventually result in the loss of gum tissue. As a result, tooth roots are exposed and left vulnerable to outside stimuli.

How Can I Protect My Teeth?

If you have problems with sensitive teeth, here are a few tips to keep in mind. First, try using a toothpaste brand that treats sensitivity. For many patients, this can bring the much-needed relief they’ve been looking for. Second, finish your brushing and flossing routine by rinsing with a fluoride rinse. Fluoride draws important minerals to teeth, strengthening them in the process. And lastly, visit your local dentist. By talking to your dentist and letting him or her see your smile, other recommendations can be made about how to help your smile.

Dental Problems

Dental hygiene are cheap but dental problems are costly for our health. Nowadays as we all know about tooth decay, gum diseases, enamel erosion, plaque in teeth are increasing among children and older people even especially youngsters because of their food habits. But incidence occur among children is decreasing or declining because of various fluoridated toothpastes available in the market.

But if you want to get rid of these problems Dr. Nadia kiderman is here for you.

now in schools or other academic places children get checked by dentists because dental problem is increasing among children like loss of tooth due to gum diseases, plaque in teeth due to deposit of layer of food particles on teeth and they doesn’t do flossing after brushing or after meal.

Dr. Nadia kiderman has a great experience in removing dental problems. Nowadays older people prone to cavities because protective gum layer or tissue often pulls away. Now what to do Dr. Nadia kiderman give a suggestion to me when i was there for treatment that regular brushing and flossing of teeth everyday don’t give chance to plaque to deposit on teeth this is main cause of tooth decay or any other disease.

he had also suggest me use mouth rinse after brushing because this vanishes bad breathe, and removing plaque from teeth. Mouth rinse is available at market like Listerine or Colgate plag.

Dr.Nadia kiderman also visit at school or any other academic place so that children get checked by him. according to his survey 60% children found tooth decay having plaque in their teeth and they didn’t do brush twice daily and they always have cold drinks, burgers, patties etc…from their school canteen and also candies, ice creams. this lead to increase dental problems. Even teenagers some boys have cigarettes and they doing smoking everyday because of chain smoking their teeth become yellowish day by day.

I see people with good home care who are getting cavities says Dr. Nadia kiderman when they have cold drinks ,wine etc their teeth are exposed to acids which leads to enamel erosion a lots of time we come up with soda diet says Dr. Nadia. He says if pain is around the teeth then immediately consult to the doctor.

Teeth sensitivity is major dental problem in the whole world. but lots of sensitivity tooth pastes are available in the market and always use fluoride toothpaste for teeth sensitivity. when we exposure to acids this leads to enamel erosion and our teeth become round and discolored due to acids. over brushing can have a similar effect on teeth and near the gum lines. if soft drinks are culprit then switch to water. second best is to drink sodas or sport drinks then after that use should use sugarless gums or do tooth brushing and also have lots of water so that these drinks can’t effect on your teeth says Dr. Nadia kiderman. if problem is over brushing then soft bristles brush should be used.

Dr. Nadia kiderman can demonstrate proper brushing techniques so that people can follow and prevent dental problems . So these are the views about dr. Nadia and I appreciate it what he has done for me.

Flossing tips by Nadia Kiderman

Nadia Kiderman very well knows how to do flossing. Some of the tips from her regarding flossing are given below so that while flosing you may not hurt yourself.

Start with around about 18 inches of floss so that you give enough space to every tooth. Now wrap its ends around your fingers and keep around 2 inches. And then gently curve it around the teeth edges to the gum line. Don’t force the floss in between your teeth, it may harm your sensitive gums. Now follow the back and forth motion that was took to get in the teeth, then to remove the floss.

The most common floss available in the market is nylon, but it easily breaks. So you should prefer PTFE floss which is last longing and easily slides between teeth.

Flossing should be done daily and properly and you are always welcome to visit Nadia Kiderman.

Importannce of Diet by Nadia Kiderman

Healthy diet is not only about maintaining body weight. The diet we take affects our teeth also. And unfortunately some of the healthy food that we take can cause tooth decay. Tooth decay is mainly caused by sugar and acids followed by incorrect brushing and flossing. So what are the preventions suggested by Nadia Kiderman? Reduce the intake of high plaque producing foods and brushing of teeth should be done several times a day.

Many different types of food can cause tooth decay in children, not just candy. Foods that are high in carbohydrates, as well as some fruits, juices and sodas, peanut butter, crackers and potato chips are culprits. Factors that cause tooth decay include the frequency in which the foods are eaten and the time they remain as particles in the mouth.

There is no need to leave your all the favourite food.
